Friday Afternoon Update 11.30.07

Filed under: Huskers, Nebraska, Omaha — eyeonomaha @ 4:53 pm

Steve Pederson has landed on his feet back at the program where his work was largely praised. Pederson was named Athletic Director at Pittsburgh where he served from 1996 until coming to Nebraska.

Motorcycle dare devil Evil Knievil has died at age 69. Family members say he suffered from diabetes and a condition that had scarred his lungs.  Makes you want to break out the old Evil Knievil action figure and stunt cycle one more time and pay a tribute by jumping it off the basement stairs .

Not much else worth touching on right now.

Everyone drive safe this weekend.

Friday 11.30.07 Morning with Mongo

A man suspected in holding up the Wells Fargo Regency Branch is also wanted to a couple bank hold ups in Des Moines as well.

However the best part of this story is, this man walked away from a half-way house in Ames where he was serving time, after he robbed a half dozen banks up that way.

A half-way house for holdup guys? How would you like to be the teller at the bank across the street from this place? Can’t you see a dozen pair of eyes peering through the privacy fence across the street staring at you every day? Who was it that said this was the way we should handle criminals? I can see it worked well here.

Police sources say the suspect is a serial robber. Ya think?

Kelsay Peterson appeared in Federal Court yesterday and entered a not guilty plea to charges she transported a minor across international borders to engage in sex. She is still being held without bail because she is considered a flight risk. She will also undergo a psych evaluation.

A shooting victim is no stranger to police,go figure, and has been shot before. No your kidding. The victim was shot near 42nd and Redman Ave, then ran into a nearby convenience store for help. He was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Police had him on a list of known gang members. And I thought someone shot him for playing Country-Western on his cars system, guess I was wrong.

An a 14 year old Jehovah Witness has died after a Judge ruled he could decline a blood transfusion that would have saved his life. The boy suffered from Leukemia and was getting treatment untill his blood count fell to low. His parents, who did not have custody, claimed his Aunt unduly influenced the boy however they declined to appeal after visiting the boy at the hospital in Boise Id. where doctors told them he had suffered brain damage by that time. Now I know why I don’t answer the door on Saturday.

And the area is under a Winter Storm Watch with Ice and Sleet expected tomorrow morning. We would show you the radar map but we don’t have a hot chick to point at it and we don’t have a radar screen, however get what you need to get done today and tonight and stay home tomorrow.

Back later today with an update after I got this weekends pick’s in with Pastor Vinny.

11.29.07 Tragic Passing of Adam Peters

We got this as a comment but it truly deserved it’s own space.

From Hockey Poor:

Folks, I love to banter and bs on this site but today is a time to bring very tragic news to the group.  A child of who has been part of the hockey family lost his life last night in a auto accident on I80.  The details are not clear as to the cause of the accident as of yet.  Adam Peters who has played hockey for the organization and a great kid with a great family has left us.  Please take a minute to hug your kids and their friends as this really hits home.

From all of us here at the Eye on Omaha, our hearts and prayers go out to the Peters family. Please extend a hand out to a member of our hockey family in this time of need. This is truly a sad day.

Update: Police report that a man was shot near 42nd and Redman Ave this morning in the NO-K coral district. The help call came from the Cubby’s convience store nearby. More details when available.

Husker fans don’t get all excited thinking Tom Osborne is going to be walking the field and installing the option. His move to name himself Interim Head Coach is only so he can under NCAA rules, recruit off campus till a new Head Coach is hired.

An Omaha woman has been sentenced to 12 months in a Federal Prison for passing $66,000 in forged checks. 4 others await sentencing in the scheme.

Two 6th graders face disciplinary action after they were caught with unloaded pellet guns at Sunny Slope Elementary School. One of the kids had the gun fall out of his pocket at lunch.

Two men ages 18 and 19 have been arrested after a homeowner in the Lake Zorinsky area caught them leaving his house with 2 shotguns. Police found a car loaded with stolen items parked in front of the house and traced the plates back to the owner. Police suspect they may be involved in a rash of West Omaha Burglaries.

And after an Executive Session last night (held off site at an undisclosed location where you can eat hot wings) the B-22 team was disbanded due to the inability of the parents and coaches to get along in harmony. So we can make the Dec 31st roster deadline, emergency try-out’s will be held for the B-22A team. Watch this site for further information.

11.28.07 Afternoon Update

Filed under: Huskers, Omaha — eyeonomaha @ 2:41 pm

Good News for once.

A Central High Student who was hit by a car after stepping off a city bus near 30th and Binney is said to be recovering well. The family of Johnnesha Brown is said though to be strapped with the financial bills and a fund has been set up at American National Bank and Peoples National Bank for anyone wishing to make donations to help out.

A 14 year old boy who pointed a gun at police while being chased will be treated as an adult. He will also be charged with being in possession of a stolen firearm.

And the transportation company that allowed a teen to escape who then was involved in the shooting of a 6 year old girl, has been dropped by the State. Finally someone did something smart.

Nothing new on the coach watch, however Tunner Gill was picked as MAC coach of the year.

And the family that got the snot kicked out of them by police after they called 911 9 times for help with their out of control son, then turned on police when they showed up to help, had a meeting with Mayor Landow, Muppet Mike and Chief Thomas Warren. The family claims it will be a stepping stone to getting and out of whack police department under control. The family plans to spend the Holiday’s in Whiteclay Nebraska while awaiting a response on if the charges of disturbing the peace will be dropped against two family members.

Sounding Stones a Sounding Point for City Arrogance

Filed under: Mongo Torrey, Sounding Stones — eyeonomaha @ 8:51 am

Residents and a City Councilman talked to the Mayors staff. The airwaves are full of people against it. Jokes continue daily about it and still our city officials fail to listen.

Parks Director Steve Scarpello scoffed at the notion that a kid could climb atop the concrete eyesores and fall to the crushed rock below (he has never seen my neighbor kids scale the side of the school building to retrieve a wayward football) and said the Sounding Stones will be moved to Elmwood Park.

Other concerns were the so called sculptures would attract loiterers as the do in Turner Park. No kidding. Beings as they will be placed in a somewhat wooded area, now the perverts wont have to waste gas headed to the Dam Sites, welcome back to Elmwood park boys.

This Mayor has shoved countless items down our pocketbooks with no care what the people of this city want. Over 90% of the neighbors don’t want this concrete dump in the park, too bad, so sad.

If it is such a epic display of art then why not display them near the other folly of Muppet Mike, the Pedestrian Bridge to Council Bluffs. Lets haul them down to the Riverfront or are they scared the pieces of questionable artwork would be mistaken for rip-wrap for the river bank?

Scarpello made the comment “We will have to agree to disagree.” What a pompous ass. Steve, worry about picking up the trash, mowing the parks, making sure the ice doesn’t melt at Benson or Hitchcock but don’t act like your the art director at the Louvre.

I had the idea to paint the stones in primary colors so at least they would look like a giant children’s toy strewn over the floor. Or find some left over J Doe’s, dress them in orange vests and make it a tribute to road work. Better yet , lets find one of the Big O’s around town so we can call this crap “O what an Eyesore”.

If it were such a delightful work of art the condo people would have wanted to keep it. However it attracted homeless and drunks and we can’t have that near our midtown development. Let’s push them out to a park where they can really get secluded and set up camp. Good thinking Steve.

As for the people of Elmwood Park and Dundee just remember you voted for this Mayor, don’t forget how he turned his back on you and laughed.

Is it just me or do these things look alot like the concrete footings for some really big street lights, just laying on their sides.

Sorry Late start due to staff meeting.

Looks like things were active here last night.

Yesterday Mayor Landow and Muppet Mike reviewed the pleadings from neighbors but still said the “Sounding Stones” will be moved to Elmwood Park.

That’s listening to the people there Mr. Mayor.

Someone dropped a South African Krugerrand in the kettle for the Salvation Army at the Kmart near 132nd and Maple. That’s right across the street from heartless Target which doesn’t allow the bell ringers. The value is thought to be around $250 dollars but it was in a sealed package so it could be worth more.

And an Omaha activist has announced that Copwatch, a National Organization that monitors police activity, is coming to Omaha.

The group uses police scanners and cameras to monitor how police act in situations. Police officials have no problem with the group as long as they do not obstruct justice.

The group wants $150,000 in city money to pay for the cameras and scanners though. It would have been cheaper to continue to pay the police auditors lunch tab, ok maybe not.

The groups first meeting will be at the OPS Tac center at 30th and Cumming on Dec 10th.

Wonder when KIDWATCH will ever come to the No-K coral. Then maybe we wouldn’t need Copwatch. Ever think of that Willie?

That’s what we got this morning, watch for the return of the B-22 team later as we voted the emailer an idiot and plan to reconstruct the season.

Mongo’s sort of Mailbox 11.27.07

Filed under: Mongo Torrey — eyeonomaha @ 7:50 pm

Here I was, preparing to take a jack hammer to the Sounding Stones again and this email forwarded from Bugs Manderson graces my mailbox. Now I have a no comment on hockey policy however in this case I am forced to Zam the top layer of ice so to speak.

I won’t post the email word for word in order to prevent the writer from being exposed for the fun hating, uptight, turd cutter they are.

Dear EyeonOmaha (It’s Eye On Omaha, retard)

I am offended by your posting in relation to the Bantam B-22 team. You are giving names to cast a thin veil on children on a certain team and some people find this humor offensive. If you are a parent on the team you are comparing your little story to, then you should be ashamed of yourself. You are not funny and if I find out who you are I intend to give you a piece of my mind face to face. Hiding behind this blog, you are a gutless bastard. The Eye’s will be looking for you from here on out.

Yeah ok. First the B22 team is a fictitious team first started here as a joke. One of our regular readers sent in a funny update which we posted as a FUCKING JOKE. It wasn’t directed at anyone on purpose but there must have been a shred of truth to it because you seem to have your panties all in a wad.

Have a fund raiser and buy a sense of humor will ya. Christ even the Little League’s have a sense of humor. Hillside had a team named the Stranglers a couple years ago. Now that’s funny.

Now don’t waste your time looking for me on the team bus, I’m not on it but I bet the ride is a pleasant as your email. Next time you visit the proctologist see if it’s time to remove the cob.

Our tag line here says to “Bring a sense of humor”. If your case sensitive then I suggest you tape your fingers together so you can’t click the link. Stop by the pharmacy and see if you can refill your prescription early so you can double dose on the happy pills and at least attempt to make yourself more attractive to some species. I’m guessing the welcome mat at your house reads “Check your nuts at the door.”

Now you might think I’m pissed and being a little hard on this person, when in reality I’m in a really good mood, it’s just that stupidity tends to set me off and so do Dr. Phil fanatics who have the sensitivity levels of the alarm system in Ft. Knox.

So from here on out I will write the B-22 updates. That way if I hit a nerve it will be purely coincidental, maybe…….Time to foil up kids…..

Tuesday Afternoon Update 11.27.07

Filed under: Huskers, Nebraska, Omaha, Sounding Stones, omaha city council — eyeonomaha @ 3:33 pm

Elmwood park residents meet with Mayor Landow, Muppet Mike was unavailable, about the concern for the movement of the Sounding Stones Sculptures from Turner Park to Elmwood Park.

Councilman Jim Vokal is also against the placement of the so called works of art due to the liability issue the city will have when some kid climbs up them, falls and shatters his noggin on the concrete below. They sit on grass in Turner Park now and make lovely shelters for the homeless at night, thus the reason for moving them. We wouldn’t want homeless 50′ from the new condos now would we.

Mayor Landow said he appreciated their thoughts and would share their concerns with Muppet Mike when he wakes from his nap, sometime in February.

90% of the Dundee/Elmwood park residents are against the movement which goes to show how well our city and Mayor’s office listen to the people.

We are still on the new head coach watch and are happy to report that Dr. Tom did eat lunch today, peed two times and took one good morning dump however we cannot confirm if the dump was interviewed for the coaching job. Tom Shatel was quoted as saying “WWWWWhhhhhheeeer’ss the P P PL PL PLane T T TOo o o Day”

UPDATE: After the players meeting T.O. said nobody has been offered the job yet. He also said he planned to eat dinner this evening.

Word on the street is that Mississippi has gained a Nutt as head coach.

Back after the team meeting is there is anything to report…..

An early morning traffic stop near 48th and Boyd turned into an officer involved shooting when a suspect bolted from the car and began running. A gun was pointed at police who returned fire striking one person in the leg.

Travis Meisinger lawyer plans to defend his client by saying that him hiding behind a door and bashing Tony Premo with a baseball bat was justified. Love to be in court to hear that. Jimmy, it stopped being self defense when the other kids in the fight went inside, now it’s called retaliation and as far as anyone can tell, Mr Premo wasn’t in the initial fight so I’d try to come up with a better defense. “Your honor, my client is an idiot.”

Hot breaking news…..Tom Osborn will eat breakfast today.

A team meeting is scheduled with the players. Husker officials say the meeting is a regular end of season gathering to discuss MVP, team banquet, announce new coach, the usual. We will wait till 4 and see if any earth shattering news comes out of Memorial Stadium.

And as we said yesterday, the coaching change seems to have taken a bite out of crime and acts of stupidity, oh wait the City Council meets today, my bad. Correct that, no meeting today, your bank account is safe for another week.

New Husker Coach Needs to Have a Hard-on for Hitting.

Filed under: Huskers, Mongo Torrey — eyeonomaha @ 8:21 am

The search is on for a new Nebraska football coach and the list starts in Baton Rouge La. . It has been reported that the Nebraska plane flew to the Bayou to interview the man that got away.

Unlike my counterparts here, I think Bo is a good fit for the Huskers. If anyone can restore the smash-mouth defense, he can. If anyone can fire up the house, he can. I like a guy who isn’t afraid to get in the other teams coach’s kitchen. Bill Snyder was a dick anyway. I like a coach who if some stupid punk wants to come down to the fence and talk shit to his players, might just yank him over the barrier, slam a helmet on his head and toss him on the field in the face of an oncoming rusher.

It might take him a year or 2 to restore the order however in one year he fixed a lackluster defense once before. As long as we have the guy that can run the offense under Joe Ganz, next year could be a blast. We way not win em all but I’m betting we would be in em all and the other team would remember being here.

Bo would be my top choice because the defense is the biggest issue in Lincoln. Nothing against Turner, but he is too nice. We need a little naughty to get our attitude back. Maybe co-head coaches, Turner and Bo. Good cop bad cop. I like it though I doubt they would go for it. How fun would it be though. Turner does the talking while Bo stands behind him giving the world the finger.

I like the thought of a coach roaming the sidelines that looks like he could incite a riot at any time. Someone who gets into the game, the players ass if he isn’t giving everything, the art of defending the house against anyone who dares enter.

We don’t need to return to the option, college football has changed and left the option to the MAC. Missouri has shown us that this is the era of the mobile, throwing QB and the spread it out and let it roll offense. The pieces are in Lincoln now, we just need someone to put the puzzle together and then put together 11 guys on defense to keep the neighbor kid from knocking the table over.

If Bo packs his bags and comes back North I expect to see some recruits that have blazing speed on defense, who came to hit someone, not try and arm tackle like a two hand touch game at the Y. I want to see a defense so mean it would make Steve Spurier eat his visor again. Bo seems to be able to turn nice guys into Junk Yard Dogs that have been fed coffee ground’s one they hit the field.

So we will wait and see what the word is. I expect something to happen after the SEC championship game, however Urban Meyer took the Florida job and stayed till the season was over in Utah so you never know. With several top jobs open we need to grab the best guy fast before other teams come courting.

If Bo’s the man then we can dig our blackshirts back out of the hamper and get our vocal cords ready to make more noise than ever before. Chances are he can still yell louder than all 80+ thousand combined and that’s a good thing. Remember this is football or as Dr. Tom calls it, a Spartan Sport. Your supposed to be tough. We don’t need group hugs we need gang tackle’s.

Now get ready to snap the chin strap and pull it tight. If Bo is on his way, the fun is about to begin.

Note to T.O.

Please hire someone, anyone today. We don’t care if it’s Pelini, Gill, Nutt,Holtz god we would even settle for Corso, just something to shut up the Omaha Media analyst from talking about this any more.

An Omaha woman told police that her husband assaulted her so she “Ran his damn ass over.”  Police answering the call near 39th and Burdette found the man a few blocks away and he was taken for medical treatment. The woman was arrested.

Remember this is the last week for yard waste pick-up. After that you will have to blow the left over leaves into your neighbors yard.

We just got a strange email about hockey and maybe someone can help us out with what happened as the person that sent it has not responded back.  The email claimed Captain Kangaroo had struck again in the Peewee A game with Lincoln. Anyone know what that was all about and if it is worthy of comment? You can comment here or send us an email to Hockeyhighlights@hotmail.com and we will look in to it.

A 14 year old Iowa teen was reported to have shot himself in the leg while coon hunting. Dirty Harry Jr. accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to club the coon in the head after he knocked it out of the tree with a few rounds.

Football season has ended for UNO and UNL fans alike, and now bitching about football season has begun.

UNO fell to Central Washington 20-17 to end their season.

Everyone knows by now Nebraska fell to Colorado, and Bill Callahan was fired. So lets talk about the greatest fans in college football for a minute.

Last night on the news they show some idiot waving a flag from the 95 championship, at 72nd and Dodge (which by the way seems to be the new gathering spot for mindless morons) proclaiming The HUSKERS are BACK. What? Oh my god, do you mean getting rid of the coach means we instantly rose to #1 in the polls. Or does it mean that because we have no patience around here, that because the media and the so called fans bitched enough we got our way and saw a mans job taken to the guillotine. First you flag waving retard, stop dressing like you fell off the back of the Goodwill truck on the way to an 80’s party, and second, don’t cheer for anyone loosing their job unless someday you want to see a crowd waving flags at the manager shooting “Bring back the old French fry guy”

Last nights border battle should be a lesson to some big red fans. Missouri stuck with Pinkle when basically he was pretty much stinking it up. Kansas did the same. You better learn to rebuild or prepare to be Notre Dame, you know the team that used to be great a long time ago like Army,Navy, Northwestern, Yale….

Great fans stick behind their teams, NO MATTER WHAT.  Bandwagon fans crack open another beer, tell everyone whats wrong and how it should be fixed, call players names and threaten coaches on voice mail and wave flags at 72nd and Dodge over a coaches firing. No wonder the rest of the country makes fun of us.

Enough of that…..

Jays beat the Huskers 74-62 Saturday afternoon at the Qwest. 5 Husker basketball fans wearing Eric Crouch jersey’s then began calling for Doc Sadler’s head on a plate, the rest of the red clad faith-full asked how long they had been playing this other sport.

A man was shot in the leg while walking near 33rd and Paxton Blvd early Saturday. Police have no suspects at this time.

UNO Ties Alaska Fairbanks 4-4 last night after winning 4-3 Friday in the return of Doc DelCostello to the Omaha area. Doc’s boys never gave up last night and clawed their way back into the game. Nice work Doc.

The Lancers snapped a two game loosing streak with a 5-4 Shoot out win over the Tri-City Storm.

Thats all we got this morning, back later if the media starts reporting real news again…..

Mongo’s Thanksgiving Wishes

Filed under: Mongo Torrey — eyeonomaha @ 7:25 am

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the good things in life that we take for granted. The holiday started as an end to the harvest season when Native Americans and Illegal aliens (Pilgrims didn’t have visa’s) sat together and enjoyed the fruits of their labor and prepared for the cold hard winter. Now it has become a gathering of family’s who for some like mine can’t stand each other the rest of the year. This year we are hosting at the request of the rest of the Torrey clan and much to the dismay of my wife and kids. I think it has something to do with last year’s debacle when we had to put out the garage fire after my health food loving sister attempted to deep fry at tofu turducken. (That tofu shaped as a chicken stuffed into tofu shaped as a duck stuffed in tofu shaped as a turkey with layers of lemon grass and dandelion weed stuffing.) Yeah I know what your thinking, it did look like something that dropped out of a cows ass and tasted much worse.

I don’t think my wife really hates my side of the family, at least its nothing a bottle of Bacardi hasn’t cured in the past, however they do tend to get on her nerves. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that they bring the shittyist side dishes known to man, or it might be the demon children that actually caused the children of the corn to move to a better neighborhood, it could even be the swisher sweet smoking, cheap cologne wearing brother who has caused all 5 of his previous wives to seek clinical help. Somewhere mom needed to stop picking up strays.

Tradition is watching the Lions get their ass kicked, eating between games then rooting for someone to beat the Cowboys. This year we pick up a third game, which relates to everyone leaving later than usual and having to call cabs, which relates into seeing them again Friday to reclaim their cars. Which also relates to my driveway looking like U-Pull-it with all the quality forms of transportation they all seem to own. I can see the neighbors all laughing and taking pictures once again.

I use my family as a teaching tool for the kids. See kids, just say no. So far it has worked well. And it leaves quality stories for my children to tell their families later in life.

I know everyone has these quality family gatherings. For some of us it reminds us how lucky we are and to be thankful we didn’t inhale paint fumes like the rest of the siblings. We can be thankful we have our health, all our teeth, and don’t live in a house that doubles as a funnel cake vending wagon in the summer.

I use the day to remind myself that I am lucky to have a good spouse and children. Thank god for inventing ice, HDTV and a bookie with a forgetful memory. Thankful for being given a good sense of humor, ten fingers to type with, dogs that poop in the neighbors yard, a refined taste in music that doesn’t include rap, a job that allows me the freedom to do this and friends that are great to just hang out with.

From the Torrey family to everyone, have a safe and wonderful holiday. Enjoy the riches that surround you daily and be thankful for what you have and extend a hand to those who don’t.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Morning Everyone

Slow news day again.

Top Story   Police are investigation a shooting at the Siena-Francis house they are calling “Homeless with Handgun”. One person was taken to Creighton Medical Center in critical condition around 10:30 last night.

The City Council approved the 40k for a study on snow removal. It should be ready in 3-4 months or just in time for Spring. The Mayor said he still preferred The God method. God put it there, God can take it away. Dan Welch commented “If only fighting fires were that easy I could get rid of all of em.”

Update 7:50 a.m.  I just got done reading a very heated email from someone wanting to set the record straight about the O.M.A.H.A. website. This person would be in the know so I am going to say it is good information.

It seems that all the Team Mangers have passwords that allow them to update their team information and that it is up to them to do so. There is a tag under every team entitled team news and they are responsible for that content. That explains why the Bantam A-1 team has info (Nice Job Ann) and others don’t. So there you go, managers people are asking for the information, if you can’t do it, appoint someone who can. Granted it might cut into the gossip hour, but there are enough people roaming around at practice with laptops, put em to work.

We are glad to continue to provide the information here as well and have been getting many email’s expressing thanks for doing so. One person’s comment was that it was a nice way for people from the other organization to send well wishes to the O.M.A.H.A. team’s and vise-versa. We are glad we could be the olive branch (however we are sure someone will be a Hawk and swing by and eat the dove at some point).

So there’s one answer to the O.M.A.H.A. information dilemma. Thanks for the update.

Our Holiday Schedule is this….

Tomorrow A.M.

We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Be safe and remember to Click it or Ticket. We want everyone to come back safe.

The State Patrol stopped a van with no plates and netted 39lbs of cocaine in the process. 2 adults were arrested and 2 children 1-14, 1- 10 months, were put in protective care

And Public Works Officials are asking for $40,000 dollars to do a study on snow removal. Give me a grand and I can give you the results. Filed under: Mongo Torrey, Omaha, Sounding Stones — eyeonomaha @ 6:38 am

Morning everyone, the Boys called in late with the Monday Night Football Flu I think but don’t quote me on that……

Another drive-by shooting in the NO-K coral yesterday afternoon as a 23 year old man was shot while standing in an alley near 36th and Ames. The man was treated at the scene.

And on short notice I couldn’t find any other news worth writing about so I am going to combine this with something I wanted to comment on anyway….It’s a Mongo 2 fer Tuesday.

Our fair city is going ahead with plans to move a modern art sculpture from Turner Park to Elmwood Park despite objections from neighbors. The artwork, known as the Sounding Stones consists of several pieces of concrete each weighing 14 to 17 tons.

I saw this story the other day and I drove by and looked for myself so I could be objective. Once I discovered what I was looking for I realized I had seen this before. One time they were fixing the sewer by my house and these things were laying all over.

Modern Art? More like a tribute to Ed Norton. The neighbors have a right to be pissed. You know all these things are going to end up being is the next graffiti blackboard in the somewhat secluded Elmwood park. I wouldn’t be surprised if it attracted back the pervert parade with promises of getting some pipe in the pipe.

I know art is in the eye of the creator or some bullshit like that, and I guess some art director at UNO put this little monstrosity together but it doesn’t fit into Elwood Park. A concrete Frisbee would have fared better reviews.

Peter Manhart is gathering signatures(add my name to the list Pete) and plans to take them to the Mayor (stop by Landow’s office first just in case the puppet is out getting oiled for the holidays) in hopes he will stop the move. Sorry Pete, we had the Bridge rammed down our throats like a bad porn movie, a new stadium coming through the backdoor and you expect him to stop this? What Mid-town wants mid-town gets. This is like asking the Omaha Housing Authority to put a HUD home in Fairacres. Elmwood park isn’t the cool kid in school anymore, Condo’s rule the halls now.

I have a different option for the residents, wait till they make the move then call and complain they are dumping illegally in the park. Or ask for the “artwork” to be displayed in a better suited location, Heflinger Park. It used to be a landfill and now is home to piles of dog crap so all we have to do is change the name of the sculpture to “Fido’s Feces”. Problem solved.

I’m in your corner, either leave them where they are or rent a jack hammer but this garbage has no place in Elmwood Park. I doubt the Mayor will listen, if he did it would be something completely out of character (He has a recurring role in Pinocico) so best of luck, however the people that will have to look out their window should have a say in whats dropped in the yard across the street. God knows they pay enough in taxes for that view.

I might be back later if anything interesting comes over the wire or I find something worth writing about during my morning meditation.

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of spending some time with a few families that have youth hockey players and quietly listened to their perception of what was really going on in the youth hockey world and how our blog has been perceived.

One thing I couldn’t help but find amusing is the idea that one or two Board Members from O.M.A.H.A. are on the staff here. I can answer you truthfully, that information is incorrect. Some of the staff have players involved but none of us hold office.

While a majority found us informative and amusing, some have this misconceived idea we are out to destroy an organization. Not hardly. When we added the hockey portion to our site, our idea was a place for open discussion. While most everyone will stand in a corner and whisper we thought maybe some people would be better served if they just got it out in the open and let the powers actually read what people were thinking. That would give them a chance to maybe explain their thinking or correct some things that were misunderstood. In some cases that has worked, in others it has shown that some people think their actions should be accepted without question.

Sometimes we have played devils advocate in order to show the membership that it’s easy to complain but when the call comes for help finding a place to hide is a popular destination.

Take the complaint about lack of information on the travel teams for example. Over the start of the season we fielded several comments about this lack of info and everyone pointing fingers at the organization. So we offered to put the information here on a timely basis and got one count em one taker who provided an update and one email over this past weekend with one Bantam AA score in it. This is like trying to get a parent to work the penalty box.

I also was amused how one person continued to blame us for comments from readers. We didn’t type them ,we just posted and in a free world, people are entitled to disagree with some positions. A short time later this same person then said it was because a friend of her’s got their feelings hurt because of things said here. Sorry we never claimed to be the “Sweep it under the rug, rah rah pages” for anything. Sure we know some peoples outlook on certain things are incorrect and in some cases plain crazy, however some are pretty close to being correct.

During the 2nd period of the UNO game Saturday, the subject of Mongo Torrey even came up. Most loved his little posts. One person wondered about his passion for kicking Mom of Many and if he should just ignore her. I will answer that by saying that he has been subdued in the answers he has given her. The number of comments not posted, or emails sent would boggle your mind. Mongo jumped in to stop the madness.

By the end of Sunday’s UNO game I came to the conclusion that the people with the biggest problem with us are the ones who either are unable to interpret the written word or think that every action they perform should be without criticism. That’s why I listen when people talk about us. I listen to the critics as well as the fans and we have actually changed our approach to certain things because of this. And as always we have offered to post any opposing viewpoint. Anyone feeling they were being treated unfairly is welcome to write a post and we will give it it’s own space. In fact two people did just that and put an end to a few rumors.

Also there is another misconceived notion that we are all about hockey on here when in fact even though there are spikes in hockey related subject matter it still isn’t the majority of our content. I would like to share a few stats to show you exactly where we get most of our hits from.

The owner of Brew Burgers at 108th and L has been ordered by the State to remove a $10,000 landscaping project because it lies on State property.

The project, which was designed to beautify a slope from the parking lot contains the logos of UNO, UNL and Creighton.

District Engineer Tim Weander tagged the project despite a letter from a County Commissioner asking that the project be allowed to stay. At no cost to the State is made the once weed covered corner look more appealing however the unreasonable Weander said if they allowed it one time they would have to allow it for everyone. Right Tim.

We will put a bunch of sewer pipe in Memorial Park and call it art but construct something that looks nice and an overzealous State worker has to make sure everyone knows he has a job with no appeal process.

It isn’t like the guy was building a sign with his business name on it, rather promoting 3 of the states fine educational schools. Sometime we just sit here and shake our heads trying to understand our state employees.

Be sure to buckle up as several law enforcement agency’s will start the CLICK IT or TICKET campaign for the holidays.

And we are still looking for people to take the lead and give updates on their Hockey teams. Were starting to see why the O.M.A.H.A. web site only has one team reporting results, it seems that everyone wants to complain but nobody but one person wants to take the time to type it out. Funny how we prove some points around here.

If you wish to take the time (about 1 minute if you type fast) to send us information and updates about your teams progress, email us at HockeyHighlights@hotmail.com and we will create a page for your team. No negative comments will be posted.

And speaking of hockey, don’t forget the Board of Directors meeting tonight at the Moylan Ice Complex. Here is your chance to stay informed and ask questions directly.

Over the weekend I had the chance to spend some time with some “hockey people” and quietly listened to some discussion about the youth hockey scene and some peoples perception about us. I am working on an Editorial on the subject for later posting.

Have a great morning everyone, enjoy the short work week.
