02.15.08 Friday Edition with an Editorial from Mongo

Just when I thought Manderson Street had something to brag about the story takes a turn. It appears the two victims that fought back the would be robber had a very large stash of marijuana in their home and have since been arrested. You just can’t find role models anymore.

Murder charges against a gang member arrested for the 2006 shooting of 24 year old Kenny Miller outside a convenience store near 24th and Redick have been dropped. It seems the 18 year old gang member scares the witnesses and now they wont testify out of fear of retaliation. Well you know this wanna be bad ass will mess up again soon enough and be back in custody, lets just hope there isn’t another victim on a slab because of it.

The Millard South teen accused of rape has been charged as an adult. Tyler Jacobson is being held on a $50,000 bond after a classmate reported that he assaulted her while giving her a ride home from school. He has since been expelled from school as well.

The NCAA doesn’t want a court battle over location of a new stadium and has said so after MECA voted 4-1 against using the parking lots at the Qwest as a location. MECA said it is willing to take legal action to protect the lots.

Muppet Mike said he and Mayor Landow are not concerned over the NCAA comments because the legal fight would be “quickly resolved in our favor”. Who’s favor Mr Muppet? You and Paul’s or the people of Omaha? This guy wont be happy till we have the highest Hotel tax in the country or our property taxes on our home’s rivals the house payment itself.

And now Mongo Torrey is here with editorial comment on LB1159,

State Senator Brad Ashford’s bill, LB 1159, proposes to help in the reduction of truant school children. The bill will require Juvenile Court Mediation after 20 absences from school, excused by the parent or not and will also take out wording in state law that no longer allows the school to take a parents word at face value for an absence.

Now Brad I know you have good intentions. You claim one out of five kids in Nebraska drops out of school which if that fact is correct puts us next to Arkansas as the leaders in retard production. However Mr Ashford, you can’t wipe our ass for us forever.

Here is the problem with this bill which is said to have no opponents down in Lincoln.

This requirement of Juvenile Court mediation would put an undue hardship on a family that has a child who has missed x amount of days due to an illness. Take a good case of mono for example, or a child injured in a car accident. Not only do the parents have the medical costs to deal with, now they have to hire one of your lawyer friends to take care of this court issue. I am guessing you did think of that didn’t you?

Ok then there is the issue of holding the parents responsible with fines and jail. You do know what’s going to happen here don’t you? The parents that really don’t give a shit if their kid is in school or not are going to claim they can’t control them and have them made wards of the state. Better hire some more drivers Brad.

Back when I was in school I didn’t know 5 kids that dropped out, let alone one in five. Did you ever think of looking at the school itself and asking why so many kids stop wanting to attend if your numbers are correct? Christ I just quoted Ernie Chambers. Well he has a point. Somewhere in the last 20+ years we did something in the schools that caused this problem. Figure out what that is Brad and you might be on to something.

Now does your bill require Homeschooler’s to report when their students miss 20+ days? If not then that’s a bit unfair don’t you think? Oh wait, I hear you and a couple other meddlers want to get involved in that department as well even though there really isn’t a problem.

I’m starting to think you would be better off relegated to checking the men’s room to make sure the toilet paper holders are full than attempting to parent for the entire state of Nebraska. We don’t need to clog our Juvenile Courts up with kids missing school for being sick, attending college workshops, family crisis. If you insist on running this up the pole then maybe you need to put in a provision that says “Court Intervention after 20 days unless the child has C+ average or better”. That way the Honor Role student who misses a few days to explore future options visiting college campuses and attending outside learning opportunities and then happens to get sick doesn’t have to force themselves to attend class and infect the entire student body with the plague just to keep their parents from having to mortgage the house to pay for an attorney to represent them and prove they are not unfit parents.

Now toss this one in the trash and go back to hiding boogers under your desk.

The views expressed in that Editorial are that of the writer and not necessarily that of the entire staff of the Eye On Omaha, however I am guessing not one of us has the balls to differ with him at this point in time, YIKES….

Don’t forget the UNO-Bowling Green series is at the Civic this weekend. We don’t want any fans going to the Qwest expecting to see the Mav’s and instead getting exposed to two guys on a mat in tights. (Here comes the email).

Have a good weekend everyone.

More later………………….

  1. Bugs you knew that home invasion story was to good to be true? When they said on the news that the guy knocked and claimed to have a Valentines present all I could picture was Chevy Chase…knock knock knock…Candy Gram…..
And what exactly do you feed Mongo in the morning? Is there any way we can get him on the floor down in Lincoln to debate this? I would pay for front row to see him tell Ashford to stop trying to wipe our butts for us.

And I have to say it is funny as hell. Now some of us would like to laugh out loud but it wouldn’t be prudent.
Keep looking out for the average Joe. Your doing a fine job.

  8. Ashford is an embarsasment with this. The last thing we need is more Government involvement and more social workers complaining about job load’s.
If you think about it, isn’t it a government entity assigned to educate our children and they do such a fine job they drive them away.
Stop trying to run every minute of our lives.

  10. Yep the folks in Lincoln they know better. If your kid isn’t in school then they aren’t learning. Better cancel that trip to Washington I had planned for the family. I better leave all the educating up to Bad Brad and his band of better thinkers. Better Living through Bigger Goverment. Just send your check to Lincoln and they will show you the proper way to spend it.

  18. Someone told me about this last night and I thought they were joking. Ashford would really want to have a parent tossed in jail if their kid missed 20 days , excused or not. Sorry I forgot, there is no excuse.
Mr. Ashford you need to stop trying to be everything to everyone. We can parent out children thank you.
My State Senator better not back this.

  19. Holy Shit Batman! Who nominated this wad as the Socialist Advocate Queen? Is he trying to outdo Dirty Ernie Chambers? Ernie’s infamous Filibuster laced with vibrator innuendo makes more sense than this knee jerk initiative. I’m moving to Montreal. At least the government pays for health benefits there.

Whoever you are, your dead on and too funny for your own good.

Senator Ashford, they are right and LB1159 is a stupid idea. I hope the rest of the Unicameral is smart enough to figure that out as well.

  23. Phil J. asked us to move this over to this post for him and we gleefully agreed.

    FYI
Nebraska ranked 6th in 9th Graders who graduated. We run at about 80 percent. That is where Ashford gets his one in five number from. Iowa is 3rd at 82.9 and believe it or not New Jersey is first at 86.9,
A question for Mr. Ashford though. Would you want to make sure that every kid is in school till they finish 12th grade even though they could be there well into their 30’s or is it more important that some kids attend even though all they will accomplish is to be a distraction to the others that are there willing to learn and not cause problems.
The fact of the matter is you will always have a group of people who are not interested in learning and never will be and if you were even able to force every one of them to attend school the problems they would create would far outweigh any positive benifits you seem to thnk you can accomplish.
Sure 20% non graduating seems like a high number and I believe there is more that can be done to help some of those children in that group that are willing and capable to learn, but tossing parents in jail because their child missed over 20 days is not the answer. It would only compound the problem and add more names and numbers to the already overcrowded justice system.
Think again about this Senator, it is the wrong idea.

  24. Hey Senator Brad,
How much easier will it be to get your kids to school when you are behind bars? Heck there are times when I take that little squirt bottle that my wife Tenielle uses for ironing and blast a little cold water in Jr. Obvious’ face to get him up in the morning. Yes there is a problem with parents that don’t care but you can’t fix stupidity and lethargy with government intrusion.

  27. Sorry, I have been on a roll lately. Feel free to delete the duplicate comment. As you can see, stupidity pisses me off especially when it comes from those elected to represent us!

On a little different subject… Maybe the City Council and the leaders of N-OK could give the police a little harder time about getting crime cleaned up in the nether-reaches of our community. Why would you encourage people to come forth and show leadership and say…. clean up their community?

Sorry people, the cops are doing all that they can do. If you want your area cleaned up, it is going to take someone brave enough to take some risks because our legal system will not allow the police to keep someone when no one is willing to testify. The cops don’t want these thugs on the street any more than you do but until the leaders of this community step up and encourage people to get involved, this problem won’t get fixed….. shit there I go repeating myself. I said that last September. Oh well maybe Ernest will actually read this now that it is going around the Bat Cave in Lincoln.

Hey Earnest, roll your sleeves up and acutally do something… oh wait you can’t… you cut them off. Nevermind.
