03.10.08 Monday with Bugs and Mongo

Forgive us for being sluggish, combine Daylight Savings with 3 Overtimes for UNO to move on in the Playoffs and we are a little scrambled this morning.

In the longest game in UNO Hockey’s 11 years the Mav’s moved on, winning 2-1 over Alaska after J.P.Platisha netted the winner with 4:22 gone in the 3rd OT. The Mav’s now go to Ann Arbor to face Michigan.

The saddest thing about this game was the crowd. The Qwest looked abandon. It was pick your seat night. I’ve seem more fans at a drop in game at Benson. Ok maybe not that bad but it did look almost as bad as a Royals game. Has the bandwagon finally left and a bunch of so called hockey fans decided to catch the next one?

Hey the football player to screw up in Lincoln under Pelini has shown his face. Police arrested Offensive Lineman Andy Christensen on first degree sexual assault charges after a 23 year old woman said he approached her from behind, reached under her clothes and sexually assaulted her. He was also charges with resisting arrest, and failure to comply.

Pelini suspended him indefinitely pending the investigation. Let’s see how fast the new sheriff gets things under control down there.

The second town hall meeting on the new stadium was held at North High. Jack Diesing Jr hinted that if we don’t build it the NCAA would go elsewhere even though they have never publicly said that. City Councilman Jim Vokal would like to actually hear the NCAA’s voice on the matter saying they should publicly state that we need to build a new stadium to secure the College World Series.

Also it was said there would be no facilities for RV’s at the new stadium. Diesing stated the 80% of the RV’s belonged to local residents anyway and it was the NCAA’s desire to eliminate the tailgating around the park.

Here is a question that people should start asking, who really owns all that stuff going up around the new ballpark location. Like the hush hush group that invested in the Boatyard, people should ask who’s backing a few bars around the Qwest.  The next public forum is tonight at Westside High School.

A Council Bluffs Police Officer answering a call of a suspicious person wandering around the Super Saver on Broadway ended up shooting the man after a short chase in which the man pointed a shotgun at the officer. The officer has been put on paid leave pending an investigation. No details on the mans condition.

And if you didn’t catch it, watch the news for this guys family members to be interviewed. It was like a casting call for Springer.

A group of Omaha Vets rallied around the defaced monument at Heartland of America Park yesterday. The American Legion members called for better lighting and increased security in the area. They also said they put their lives on the line for freedom and now that freedom is being abused. We’re in favor of posting guards at the memorials armed with paintball guns and a secured position.

That’s it for now, more later………………

03.07.08 Friday Working for the Weekend

Muppet Mike had a little get together with his former friends in South Omaha. The puppet road show appeared at the Larietzen Gardens in an effort to justify the new Downtown Ballpark. The show has added a couple of new performers in Ken Stinson who plays the nervous friend and Jack Diesing who appeared nervous and ashamed at times.

The people who attended the show were treated to the same act as before. You know “We haven’t raised taxes in 7 years” (Just the valuations so we get more money.) “Trust us”

The show was greeted to a chorus of Boo’s and catcalls throughout. Not much new information was released with the exception of a hint that a former food processing plant at 10th and Capitol would be raised to build some temporary parking.

The show has two more programs scheduled, one at North High and the other at Westside. Wonder why they didn’t travel out to Elkhorn?

James Martin Davis is asking for a plea deal for Kelsy Peterson. JMD says the one thing she is guilty of is statutory rape and she has not been charged with that. The Judge has Ok’s a pre-trial conference and said if an agreement is not reached by April 18th a trial date will be set.

Dawson County Attorney Liz Waterman plans to prosecute Peterson no matter what the fed’s decide. She says because most of the crimes took place in Dawson County that the locals should handle most of this. Does Dawson county ban public flogging? Liz sounds like she would be in favor of water-boarding Peterson.

Davis wants to depose the young man Peterson fled with and his mother saying he has information that mom knew they were going and gave them the addresses of relatives in Mexico. He said the boy also drove part of the way and never made any attempt to escape.

The Mayor and the Firefighters are hung up on a couple of details in the contract dispute and now it is in the hands of a labor relations board.

The Firefighters are asking for a cost of living raise of 3.85% and the Mayor is asking for 3.5. The big issue is heath care benefits. The Firefighters have conceded that they will have to share the cost but want similar co-pay and out of pocket cost as they have now.

Also at issue is the way pensions are arrived at. The Mayor wants a formula that limits overtime calculated into the salary at 250 hours, the Firefighter want 300.

And there is the issue of 6 million owed the Firefighters from back in 2004 from a pay freeze and back holiday and vacation pay the firefighters held off on to help the Mayor pay some city bills. The Mayor wants the payment to not have to be all in one year. Were guessing he doesn’t have it but has the money to start the new stadium.

The Mav’s beat Alaska 4-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the Best of Three playoff series. Tonight they face Kieth Urban, wait, Saturday they square off again.

Mongo sent in a note to remind you all that tonight is the rematch between Omaha and Cedar Rapids. This time it’s the Lancers and the Rough Riders though.

The Lincoln Stars are in town Saturday.

Creighton kicks off Mo-Valley Tournament play this afternoon against Bradley at 2:30.

That’s all I got for now….More later……Hey has anyone seen Andrew ? No? He must be in Elbonia scouting players.

02.24.08 Weekend Edition

Filed under: Creighton, Huskers, Lincoln, Nebraska, OPS, Omaha, Omaha Lancers, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 10:21 am

Armed with a laptop, a bottle of cough syrup, prescription antibiotics and my favorite blanket, I will attempt to put together something worth reading.

The story on the news of the 4 year old girl who has show police how she smokes pot with her mom and mom’s boyfriend just made me vomit even more.

Police were called to the house after reports of the 4 year old girl and 2 year old boy filthy dirty and within reach of drug paraphernalia. The little girl demonstrated for investigators how she smoked joints used a pipe and a bong and how her mom’s friends laughed when she did it.

25 year old Lisa Schuchard faces felony child abuse charges and could get up to 6 years in prison. How someone can do this to their own child just sickens me.

2 shootings were reported early Saturday making it sound like the NO-K coral is business as usual.

2 males , one 19 the other 23, were victims in a drive by at 27th and Fort.

And a 26 year old male was shot at 37th and Saratoga after an SUV chased the vehicle he was driving and shot him. Can’t wait for the weather to warm up and this stuff to get totally out of control again.

Look like DiAnna Schimik is at it again with her “Government Knows Best” nonsense.

Her bill, LB1141, would require home schooled students to take state mandated tests or have school work assessed by an outside evaluator. If the student should fall short they would be sent to a private or public school, even though home schooled children test at or above their private/public schooled counterparts on a regular basis. HMMMMM…. Oh did we mention DiAnna’s husband is a lobbyist for the Teachers Union.

DiAnna if there were a real problem this might make sense but when the home schooled kids are scoring higher than others on the ACT and SAT’s, well somebody is doing something right and it isn’t you and Brad Ashford trying to make the state the parents for every child.

The Governor said he will veto this if it should happen to make it to his desk.

And while we are on the school issue, LB1135 would blur the lines between club and high school programs when it comes to sports.

Right now a student-athlete is not allowed to participate in and outside activities in the same sport during the active season.

Jim “I don’t care if it’s a Blizzard, drive the bus to Lincoln anyway” Tenopir says it regulates the kids time and keeps the playing field even. Mediocre but even.

I loved the example by one parent, “So does that mean a kid shouldn’t be allowed to take extra math lessons on the side, or work?” Good point. At what time is the child’s time belong to the parent and when did the NSAA get parental rights.

My favorite quote came from Kelley Hood.”People have got to trust that those of us who work in education, we know what seems to be best for kids.”

Translate that to mean “Parents we will tell you what’s best for your kids and you will like it”.  Better living through Bigger Government.

The Lancers are pulling away from the pack in the USHL. Last nights win in Des Moines 8-2 coupled with Friday nights win over Sioux City 3-2 has them playing their best hockey of the year.

UNO on the other hand has dropped 3 in a row and got swept at Northern Michigan, losing 6-4 on Friday and 4-3 in overtime on Saturday after entering the 3rd leading 3-1.

Creighton won it’s bracket buster game over Oral Roberts Saturday on a 3 pointer at the buzzer and the earth is still standing still as Nebraska beat it’s second ranked opponent in 2 games.

That’s all I have the strength to muster up at this point.

02.22.08 Friday Mongo filling in for the sicko’s

Filed under: Lincoln, Mongo Torrey, Nebraska, Omaha, Omaha Lancers, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 7:18 am

Glad I’m not in the same block let alone building as the rest of these guys. Geno called begging for help. “Mongo I don’t know how Bugs does it, I only write a post here in there but never the entire page, can you help me, boo hoo hoo hoo”.

So at 6:15 a.m. I am a bit cranky after working the graveyard shift over at Fast Freddie’s Taco Mart and Firearm’s store, now featuring Live Bait and Pizza.

What is going on with all these people and kiddie porn? Now there is a warrant out for the mom of a 15 year old girl after it was discovered that “mom” photo shopped her daughters face on some nude pictures and posted them on the Internet. Mom has also posted a few naked pics of her 49 year old ass on there as well. I know it isn’t her body mom, but that’s your own kids face you did that to. And she found them doing a search of her own name.

Now there is no wonder why this (biting tongue) woman is an EX-wife. Her daughter lives with the father.

UNL has banned the nationally popular game assassin from all campus buildings and grounds after campus police were alerted to a gunman only to find the guy armed with and bright orange nerf gun.

The game that has been around for some time has a player drawing someones name and then they have to hunt them down and tag them with a nerf dart or at other schools water pistols are used or even socks.

UNL has called the game inappropriate. Next on the ban list is Hide and Seek and pin the tail on the Peerlman.

Strong words from the Governor yesterday as he referred to the Nebraska Supreme Court as an “Activist Court”. (Hey Gov tell us something we don’t know)

Hell Uncle Ben Nelson once dressed up as the scariest thing he could imagine for Halloween,  A Supreme Court Justice. And he appointed most of them.  I am not saying he put in people with his agenda, I’m saying their agenda scares the crap out of him as well.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the electric chair does not violate the 8th amendment of cruel and unusual punishment and in their ruling the Nebraska Court acknowledged that, then interpreted an identical amendment in the Nebraska State Constitution to mean something different. Call it activist, call it Ernies going away hummer, call it what you want, it’s bull shit. Just my opinion.

An Omaha woman gave a ride to a man she though she knew, well she knew but apparently not well enough because he zapped her with a taser, handcuffed her in the back seat, drove a few blocks and kicked her out of the car , then stole her car.

She called police from a gas station at 52nd and Military and police quickly arrested the suspect. My question is “Were the handcuffs fur covered?”

Let’s see what’s going on this weekend,

UNO travels to the Great White North to take on Northern Michigan in Marquette. This will be the first contest between the Mavs and former Assistant Coach Rob Facca who took a job with the Wildcats over the summer.

The Lancers are at home Friday against Sioux City (does the restraining order keep our Bantam people out of this game or just up there? Sorry had to get at least one joke in however there is no truth to the rumor the Bantams will give punching lessons to the team before the game) OK enough of that…anyway its Lowes Youth Building Kit night. The first 300 kids get a Lowes youth tool set capable of taking most household items apart and starting a major remodeling project if you wanted to or not, Get there early.

And I hate basketball do who cares if the Huskers or Jays are at home.

If you got anything good, email me early, otherwise have a great weekend.

The Lancers posted a 7-0 win at Sioux Falls making Mike Hastings the winingest Coach in USHL history. The win also keeps the team 2 points in front of Indiana for the overall lead.

Last nights trip to the civic ended in disappointment as Bowling Green topped the Mav’s 3-1 on the back of the BG Goalie,Eno, who was blistered throughout the night but turned everything but one shot away.

A little over 7,000 was there with us and made us wish that many had come to watch the Knights with us on a regular basis. That is still a great place to watch a hockey game.

Creighton took another shot to the head yesterday in Peoria, falling to Bradley 87-59. Creighton has 4 regular season games left.

So much for our Sports Extra Update….

02.16.08 Weekend Update

Filed under: Lincoln, O.M.A.H.A. Hockey, OPS, Omaha, Omaha Lancers, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 9:13 am

Another well liked teacher/coach has shocked all that knew him and has been charged with possession of child porn.

Tom Gellatly, the speech and drama teacher at McMillan Magnet Middle School was charged after dozens of images of prepubescent males were found on his home computer. Gellatly also served as the swimming coach and had previously taught at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School.

Friday must have been the day for stupid court rulings. A Sarpy County Judge has released Heather Henning on bond pending her appeal that the sentence for her killing Douglas County Sheriff Deputy Shad Nicks while she was driving drunk was excessive. Henning was given a mere 3 1/2 to 5 years in jail for the incident. Due to an error in labeling the blood alcohol evidence Henning’s charges were lowered as it is. Heather had only sat in jail for a month before her release. Shad’s family will serve a lifetime without him.

A Knox County District Court Judge has ordered a couple who was attempting to adopt a child, to return the three month old to it’s biological mother after it was discovered they did not disclose the mothers pregnancy.

The 22 year old biological mother had wanted her son to be an only child and now could no longer support the placement.

The couple said they had not intended to deceive anyone and that the mother had miscarried three times previously.

Karen Authier, Executive Director of Nebraska Childrens Home Society’s praised the Judges ruling.

Ok let me get this right, the 22 year old didn’t want to raise the child but wanted to dictate how many kids were to be in the family? The people adopting the child had miscarried 3 times so it would be prudent to think it could happen again and they want badly to raise a family, unlike the woman giving the child up?

It sounds to me like birth mom didn’t want the expense and responsibility of raising the child but wanted to call all the shots while it was being raised. And maybe it’s just me but this sounds like Baby Brokering and a Judge just facilitated it.

Hope Brad Ashford is reading this….In the second time in a week a driver contracted by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was been charged with endangering a child in their care after a man was arrested for sexually assaulting a 15 year old he was transporting to a group home. This follows a woman arrested for DUI with a blood alcohol level of .40 transporting a ward of the state down I-80. Another youth being transported earlier this year escaped and was later charged in a murder in Omaha.

So Mr.Ashford do you really still want to clog up Juvenile Court with kids missing school when it appears the State has a big enough problem watching out for  the kids in it’s care already?

And then we spotted this.

The Dawson County Board has ignored the advice of its County Attorney and voted to hire outside council to fight the opening of Shaker’s West, a nude dance club owned by the same person who runs the location in Waverly.

The County Attorney informed the board that the code did not differentiate between the types of commercial use. No alcoholic beverages would be served or permitted. He warned the board that this will cost an enormous expense to the county to fight an unattainable battle.

The owner of the club’s attorney vowed to file suit if the Board attempted to halt the opening saying they would charge them for  loss of revenue and reduction in property value all which will cost the County taxpayers considerable expense if the win.

Just a word to the County Board out there, you better look around and do some research on this because you won’t win this case and you will cost everyone a ton of money, wait what am I saying , you won’t win…Shit Heather Henning’s out of jail, anything can happen. Lawyer up folks and may the best suit win.

A big high five goes out to Mike Hastings of the Omaha Lancers. With last nights 7-2 blasting of the Tri-City Storm Mike ties former Des Moines Coach Bob Ferguson’s all-time USHL win mark at 517. He will look to break that mark tonight when the Lancers take on Sioux Falls. The win also puts Omaha ahead of Sioux City by 14 points.

And UNO rocked the old barn last night with a 5-3 win over Bowling Green at the Civic. ( Hockey is so much better there). The two teams meet again tonight in the old house.

And there is some pretty good hockey going on out at Moylan as the O.M.A.H.A. Jr Lancers host Shattuck St. Mary’s this weekend. Games are Sat 2/16/07 at 11:15 and 7 p.m. and Sunday 2/17/08 at 10 a.m.

And the Midwest Champion Bantam AA team will be hosting the Presidents Day tournament over the weekend as well.

So get your butts off the couch and get out there.

And Pat, I don’t care what anybody else says, but as I sit here and write this I have to say NICE JOB on the TV’s. What a pleasant surprise to walk in here today and not have to lean on the front counter or fight 15 unwatched siblings over the Disney Channel. The place looks great and you and your staff should be commended. The only thing that could make this wall of video any better would be if everyone passed the hat and kicked in for a subscription to Center Ice. Then again, some of us would never go home.

Have a great weekend everyone………

02.15.08 Friday Edition with an Editorial from Mongo

Just when I thought Manderson Street had something to brag about the story takes a turn. It appears the two victims that fought back the would be robber had a very large stash of marijuana in their home and have since been arrested. You just can’t find role models anymore.

Murder charges against a gang member arrested for the 2006 shooting of 24 year old Kenny Miller outside a convenience store near 24th and Redick have been dropped. It seems the 18 year old gang member scares the witnesses and now they wont testify out of fear of retaliation. Well you know this wanna be bad ass will mess up again soon enough and be back in custody, lets just hope there isn’t another victim on a slab because of it.

The Millard South teen accused of rape has been charged as an adult. Tyler Jacobson is being held on a $50,000 bond after a classmate reported that he assaulted her while giving her a ride home from school. He has since been expelled from school as well.

The NCAA doesn’t want a court battle over location of a new stadium and has said so after MECA voted 4-1 against using the parking lots at the Qwest as a location. MECA said it is willing to take legal action to protect the lots.

Muppet Mike said he and Mayor Landow are not concerned over the NCAA comments because the legal fight would be “quickly resolved in our favor”. Who’s favor Mr Muppet? You and Paul’s or the people of Omaha? This guy wont be happy till we have the highest Hotel tax in the country or our property taxes on our home’s rivals the house payment itself.

And now Mongo Torrey is here with editorial comment on LB1159,

State Senator Brad Ashford’s bill, LB 1159, proposes to help in the reduction of truant school children. The bill will require Juvenile Court Mediation after 20 absences from school, excused by the parent or not and will also take out wording in state law that no longer allows the school to take a parents word at face value for an absence.

Now Brad I know you have good intentions. You claim one out of five kids in Nebraska drops out of school which if that fact is correct puts us next to Arkansas as the leaders in retard production. However Mr Ashford, you can’t wipe our ass for us forever.

Here is the problem with this bill which is said to have no opponents down in Lincoln.

This requirement of Juvenile Court mediation would put an undue hardship on a family that has a child who has missed x amount of days due to an illness. Take a good case of mono for example, or a child injured in a car accident. Not only do the parents have the medical costs to deal with, now they have to hire one of your lawyer friends to take care of this court issue. I am guessing you did think of that didn’t you?

Ok then there is the issue of holding the parents responsible with fines and jail. You do know what’s going to happen here don’t you? The parents that really don’t give a shit if their kid is in school or not are going to claim they can’t control them and have them made wards of the state. Better hire some more drivers Brad.

Back when I was in school I didn’t know 5 kids that dropped out, let alone one in five. Did you ever think of looking at the school itself and asking why so many kids stop wanting to attend if your numbers are correct? Christ I just quoted Ernie Chambers. Well he has a point. Somewhere in the last 20+ years we did something in the schools that caused this problem. Figure out what that is Brad and you might be on to something.

Now does your bill require Homeschooler’s to report when their students miss 20+ days? If not then that’s a bit unfair don’t you think? Oh wait, I hear you and a couple other meddlers want to get involved in that department as well even though there really isn’t a problem.

I’m starting to think you would be better off relegated to checking the men’s room to make sure the toilet paper holders are full than attempting to parent for the entire state of Nebraska. We don’t need to clog our Juvenile Courts up with kids missing school for being sick, attending college workshops, family crisis. If you insist on running this up the pole then maybe you need to put in a provision that says “Court Intervention after 20 days unless the child has C+ average or better”. That way the Honor Role student who misses a few days to explore future options visiting college campuses and attending outside learning opportunities and then happens to get sick doesn’t have to force themselves to attend class and infect the entire student body with the plague just to keep their parents from having to mortgage the house to pay for an attorney to represent them and prove they are not unfit parents.

Now toss this one in the trash and go back to hiding boogers under your desk.

The views expressed in that Editorial are that of the writer and not necessarily that of the entire staff of the Eye On Omaha, however I am guessing not one of us has the balls to differ with him at this point in time, YIKES….

Don’t forget the UNO-Bowling Green series is at the Civic this weekend. We don’t want any fans going to the Qwest expecting to see the Mav’s and instead getting exposed to two guys on a mat in tights. (Here comes the email).

Have a good weekend everyone.

02.12.08 Tuesday with Bugs and Mongo

Filed under: Lincoln, Mongo Torrey, New Stadium in Omaha, Omaha, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 8:05 am

Sorry about the late start, I was busy getting an early morning ass chewing via email for being late…….I passed it on to Torrey so he could indulge in the fun as well.

First up…..

An Omaha man only gets 7 years for having his computer loaded with over 6000 images of child porn. Sean Brannen used a peer to peer network to download the images and it is said to be one of the largest seizures in the state. Sean will be serving his time in federal prison where we hope siezures will be a frequent occurrence in his everyday life for the next 7 years.

The Bellevue City Council voted 6-3 against drafting a City smoking ban. Council members said they wanted to see what happens with the State wide proposal in the Legislature and avoid paying an Attorney to draft something that would be covered under State law anyway.

Lincoln police have busted another person for selling prostitution off of CraigsList. 24 year old Allissa Greiner was arrested after officers arranged a meeting in downtown Lincoln where she exposed her breast and discussed a price. I only wish we could show you a picture of her here as her aka name was “Bunny”. There is no way in hell you would picture this chick as a “Bunny”. Well road kill rabbit maybe but not a “Bunny”. I feel sorry for the Officer that had to witness the exposure. Hope he got hazard pay.

Looks like Handshake Hal and Muppet Mike are gearing up for another Battle in the media. Hal wants the stadium committee to look into the U.P. property on the North side of Abbott Drive and Muppet Mike says that will be to costly and he wants his Stadium next to the Qwest so it will appear to justify the Pedestrian Bridge to the Council Bluffs Homeless Hangout.  Hal also would like to see the Stadium built with bonds so it has to go to a vote of the people whereas Muppet Mike wants to figure out a way to keep the voters out of the mix for some reason. No word from Mayor Landow on this so far but we are sure he will speak up later today.

The City Council was briefed yesterday on progress but few would comment at this stage.

Don’t forget the UNO-Bowling Green series is back in the old house this weekend due to the State Wrestling Tournament at the Qwest.

And the University received approval for a Thurs-Sat-Sunday format for the first round of the CCHA playoffs due to the Kieth Urban Concert at the Qwest on that Friday.

Back later with more………………….

The Lancers knocked out two wind over the weekend. A 5-2 win over Chicago at home on Friday, followed by a 6-5 penalty marred barn burner in Waterloo.

Sorry but it was a boring news weekend. More later……………….

Filed under: Nebraska, Omaha, Omaha Lancers, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 8:43 am

19 year old Alissa Harger entered a plea of guilty yesterday to all 6 counts of Drunk Driving. You remember this little sweetie. 6 DUI’s in 2 months, one at twice the legal limit doing 94 on West Dodge with her infant in the car.

She remains in custody on a $100000 bond and awaits sentencing which hopefully will be a little more than a slight tap on the wrist and an ankle bracelet for 6 months.

In another go figure news story, police exercised a search warrant on the former home of the Von Maur shooter. That woman everyone wanted to anoint for saint hood because she was “trying to help him get on with his life” was busted for selling and using drugs. As Gomer Pile once said SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE or something like that. Yep old Deb Maruca-Kovac was also sited for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and her kid was nailed for possession as well.

An Omaha Police officer and his wife have been charged with 4 counts of felony child abuse after allegations surfaced that they had handcuffed their 13 year old son for a lengthy period of time because he was caught smoking. The restraint caused no injury to the boy who is said to have had other problems with inhalants and behavior issues. The officer is on administrative leave and if convicted would loose his job.

Police made a traffic stop near 42nd and I-80 that netted a 123lb marijuana bust. Police arrested a 56 year old male and a 21 year old female from Texas and charged them with possession with intent to deliver.

A 36 year old man was arrested in a Bellevue Motel for practicing piercing and body art without a license after he was turned in for piercing a 16 year old tongue. Conditions in the room were less than sanitary. Officials say the man has been in the room for 5 weeks and it appears he has done more than just the one piercing.   Great, Gypsy Piercing and Tattoo’s- get your communicable disease all in one stop.

Police and Health and Human Services are working on a cease and desist order. The motel should just evict him.

UNO is home to Ohio State both tonight and Saturday.

The High School All-Star game will proceed the UNO contest on Sat. Get out and support the kids.

The Lancers are at home to face The Chicago Steel tonight then take to the road to face Waterloo on Saturday.

Thanks to Mongo for filling in for me while I battled a virus last week and over the weekend.

To answer the first dozen questions in my mailbox this morning, No we did not intentionally pull the “Little Billy Dumbass” story. While editing a few threatening comments we somehow lost the main article and are going to see if Mongo can reconstruct it off his notes. Check back later…

Not much in the news today.

Few details are being released about a Papillion man arrested for 2nd degree murder of his mothers boyfriend. The 29 year old man was taken away after police were called to a disturbance and found the dead body.

What is going on in Papillion anymore? It seems to be in the news a lot and for all the wrong reasons.(That was a joke by the way, don’t start sending hate mail.)

One that got missed yesterday, While investigating an man sleeping in his car with the motor running  officers opened the door at which time the man threw the car in reverse, trapping the officer in the door and dragging him near 42nd and Kansas Ave. When an attempt was made to stop the vehicle the driver sped off with an officer firing at the car hitting the back window. Police later found the car abandoned at Martin Ave and Redick.

The officer was treated and released and no suspect has been captured.

While I was sick in bed I did watch most of the playoff games.

The ageless one, Brett Favre guided the Pack to a snow covered win over Seattle.

Eli Manning and the Giants ousted the Cowboys.

The unbeaten Patriots fought off a pesky Jaguar team.

And San Diego eliminated the reigning Super Bowl Champion Colts.

UNO dropped a pair to Miami-Ohio over the weekend.

The Lancers took 2 from Des Moines then won a heart stopper last night at home.

With less than a second left in regulation, Chris Hepp pounded home the winning goal in a 2-1 win over Tri-City. The 6 points over the weekend puts the Lancers alone in First Place.

And from the email’s there was some great action in the Midwest Peewee play out at Moylan over the weekend. We are still waiting for updates from our trusted sources before posting results.

Back later with more……………

Funerals and memorial services are underway for the Von Maur shooting victims. Westroads reopened except for the department store.

Get ready for the Kelsey Peterson case to get really crazy as if it wasn’t already. She is due in court today to see if she will be released from jail pending trial.

Meanwhile an attorney has agreed to represent the alleged 13 year old alleged victim free of charge. She claims the family of undocumented workers have been torn apart by this and that they have done nothing wrong.

I guess this lawyer was gone from class the day they discussed the term ILLEGAL. You can sugar coat it calling them undocumented but the true fact of the matter is they are illegal aliens, so don’t say they did nothing wrong.

As for dear Kelsey, I wouldn’t plan on being home for Christmas. I doubt they are going to allow bail.

A home invasion near 25th and Fort Saturday left a woman in the home shaken but uninjured as a man forced his way in, yelling the name of a man who also lives there, firing a couple shots then leaving. Someone owes someone something.

Are you sick of seeing the story about Oprah out on the trial with Obama? Just let the guy give his message, we don’t need Oprah telling us how we should feel about ourselves.

UNO Tied Lake Superior State 1-1 and 3-3 over the weekend.

The Lancers dropped an overtime loss to Sioux City 3-2 then bounced back to blank Lincoln 2-0.

Creighton topped St Joe’s 90-84 in OT

Some of the boys will be around later today is their schedule allows.

Only 14 more shopping days till Santa slides his fat ass down the chimney. I am still trying to figure out what to get Mrs. Torrey. Watch you ankles, I could be shopping in a store near you in an attempt to not offend her with my offerings this year.

Amidst the ice storm we bring you the nonsense:

Looks like Bo Pelini will be coming back to Nebraska. Sources say he will be announced as the new Husker Coach as early as Sunday.

Heather Henning get to keep her drivers license after her lawyer argued that loosing it would be an inconvenience. Henning will have to blow into a tube and have her picture taken before the car will start. Meanwhile Shad Nick’s family will only be able to look at a picture of him for the rest of their lives. Nice work Judge.

Bank Robbery suspect David Pederson was arrested at a Lincoln Hotel last night. Maybe Nebraska has a stronger holding cell than the half-way house in Ames Ia.

Charges were reduced in the case of Delayno Shackelford. Delayno kicked his 8 month pregnant girlfriend so hard it killed the fetus. Witnesses disappeared in the case so prosecutors say they had no  choice but the reduce the charges to gain a no-contest plea. Schackleford’s 20 year old girlfriend had a case of memory loss as well. They have another child together which is 2 1/2 years old.

Last night UNO fell to Notre Dame in hockey , while Lancer Coach Mike Hastings recorded his 500th victory in a 2-1 win over Des Moines.

Special thanks to the guys over at  “You Gotta be Whacked” for donating the tons of dry ice to freeze over Zig’s pond for try-outs. Reports say all in going well despite the weather.

Football season has ended for UNO and UNL fans alike, and now bitching about football season has begun.

UNO fell to Central Washington 20-17 to end their season.

Everyone knows by now Nebraska fell to Colorado, and Bill Callahan was fired. So lets talk about the greatest fans in college football for a minute.

Last night on the news they show some idiot waving a flag from the 95 championship, at 72nd and Dodge (which by the way seems to be the new gathering spot for mindless morons) proclaiming The HUSKERS are BACK. What? Oh my god, do you mean getting rid of the coach means we instantly rose to #1 in the polls. Or does it mean that because we have no patience around here, that because the media and the so called fans bitched enough we got our way and saw a mans job taken to the guillotine. First you flag waving retard, stop dressing like you fell off the back of the Goodwill truck on the way to an 80’s party, and second, don’t cheer for anyone loosing their job unless someday you want to see a crowd waving flags at the manager shooting “Bring back the old French fry guy”

Last nights border battle should be a lesson to some big red fans. Missouri stuck with Pinkle when basically he was pretty much stinking it up. Kansas did the same. You better learn to rebuild or prepare to be Notre Dame, you know the team that used to be great a long time ago like Army,Navy, Northwestern, Yale….

Great fans stick behind their teams, NO MATTER WHAT.  Bandwagon fans crack open another beer, tell everyone whats wrong and how it should be fixed, call players names and threaten coaches on voice mail and wave flags at 72nd and Dodge over a coaches firing. No wonder the rest of the country makes fun of us.

Enough of that…..

Jays beat the Huskers 74-62 Saturday afternoon at the Qwest. 5 Husker basketball fans wearing Eric Crouch jersey’s then began calling for Doc Sadler’s head on a plate, the rest of the red clad faith-full asked how long they had been playing this other sport.

A man was shot in the leg while walking near 33rd and Paxton Blvd early Saturday. Police have no suspects at this time.

UNO Ties Alaska Fairbanks 4-4 last night after winning 4-3 Friday in the return of Doc DelCostello to the Omaha area. Doc’s boys never gave up last night and clawed their way back into the game. Nice work Doc.

The Lancers snapped a two game loosing streak with a 5-4 Shoot out win over the Tri-City Storm.

Thats all we got this morning, back later if the media starts reporting real news again…..

FDR cut 300 jobs in the Omaha area yesterday. Now based in Denver, they are said to be cutting 6% of their work force.

Makes you really glad we gave them all the tax breaks to build at AK SAR BEN, and all the new jobs they promised.

Judge Max Kelch accepted a plea deal that has upset many for the appearance of being to soft, in the homicide of Douglas County Deputy Shad Nicks. The part of this that should turn every-ones stomach is this woman’s lawyer wants her to keep her license because she needs to get to work and school. Now that she has pleaded no contest we can say this, Shad needed to get home to his family Mr Pivovar, you client shouldn’t be allowed to drive anything but a bicycle. Model Client my ass.

Bellevue police arrested a man for suspected DUI after he almost hit a cruiser head on. When police attempted to arrest the 42 year old drunk he resisted and had to be put to the ground. He was later cited for child neglect after officers discovered he had left 3 small children home alone at the time.

The save Rosenblatt committee unveiled its plans for a 60 million dollar make-over of the ballpark. They plan to send their idea to College World Series Inc. in hopes they would take it to the NCAA and want to show it to the Mayors Stadium task force. The Mayor and his puppet responded by saying they could bring it at the public hearing.

Anybody wonder why the Mayor doesn’t want these people to be heard? If I were a betting man I’d say its because the new Stadium is a done deal and all the committee is working on is the plan to ram it down our pocket books just like the pedestrian bridge to nowhere.

LaVista police arrested another pervert for trying to entice a child into a sexual act. An undercover officer posing as a minor received explicit images from Kyle Boettger. The 23 year old was arrested during a traffic stop. Wonder if he knows Mike Govig?

A man was arrested after a high speed chase down the Interstate this morning. Omaha police took over the pursuit at 144th and I-80.

The man traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes at over 70 mph for most of the chase. Officers backed off and the police helicopter followed the car with its spotlight until it was forced off the interstate at I-480 and 24th street where the suspect was arrested.

So much for the bad news around town.

This weekend UNO takes on the Bulldogs of Ferris State Friday night and Sunday.

The Lancers travel to Chicago for a two game series against the Steel.

The Huskers are off till next Fridays game with Colorado.

Sunday Night 11.11.07

Nebraska showed signs of life Saturday after a record setting performance by Joe Ganz led the Huskers past Kansas State. Joe showed his mobility as he threw for 7 touchdowns and over 500 passing yards on Senior Day. Next Up Colorado, the day after Thanksgiving.

UNO completed it’s first undefeated regular season in 53 years with a 59-21 victory over Central Washington. The Mavs roll into the Division II playoffs after cruising to a 10-0 (8-0) record in the final season of the North Central Conference.

UNO will face the winner of the Ashland-Central Washington game, Nov,24th at Caniglia Field.

UNO also had a great Hockey weekend with a sweep of  Ohio State, winning 5-2 both nights and scoring their first points in conference play.

The Lancers won Friday 4-2 over Cedar Rapids, 5-2 over Green Bay and Lost 2-5 to Sioux City this evening.

Congratulations to Creighton Prep Blue for its capturing the crown at this years Fall Freeze Hockey tournament at Moylan Ice Arena.

 prep-blue-fall-freeze-champions-11-11-7.JPG

A drive-by shooting at 38th and Erskine left three wounded Friday evening. Seems like the NO-K Coral is heating up again.

Saturday a fight in the street resulted in another shooting near 22nd and Emmet.

In an effort to avoid the NO-K and collect some overtime payed by project Extra Mile, police arrested 19 for MIP in two separate raids.

13 were ticketed at a party near 89th and Douglas, while 6 more were nailed near 122nd and Miami.

The Beach Club near 84th and Center can wave by-by to its Liquor license if the City Council has any nads, after a fight resulted in gunshots, a person hit in the face with a bottle and bottles being thrown at police as they tried to break up the action. Gunshot damage was reported on the East side of the building. Police had to deploy pepper balls into the crowd. Glad they do a good job of stopping open containers at the door there.

And I don’t get to contribute to the daily posts with Editorial comment too much however I would like to call attention to a subject relating to Hockey in Omaha. I was in attendance at this years Fall Freeze for the games involving Creighton Prep Blue and enjoyed watching them skate to the title. I was disturbed by some of the officiating of level there of. In all my years around hockey in Omaha it has been my thought that as a whole the level of talent has been adequate, however I have noticed a slip in the level in recent years. Most apparent were games on Saturday involving Mr. Firmature who seems to have a tough time keeping up anymore and should consider not skating the upper level games or stepping back and training new talent to wear the stripes. Steve’s attitude has become even more combative than ever before.

Also Sunday I was watching I believe a Peewee level game while waiting for the Finals to begin and couldn’t believe my eyes at the officials we put on the ice for that game. Eric Janke has been around since the dawn of time however it’s time for him to retire. He is a risk of injury every time he takes the ice but his inability to keep up with even the younger kids was never more apparent. Mr. Janke waved off two goals while being completely out of position thus costing the visiting Stars team a tie or win. This looks bad for our hockey program as both were terribly bad calls. At one point Mr. Janke seemed to be arguing with his fellow referee on the ice. This young kid deserved better as he was correcting a wrong call by Mr. Janke. Isn’t it important to get it right not just make sure your right?

The visiting fans were talking in the lobby about this and it concerns me that if we allow this kind of officiating to exist then we risk getting a reputation as a place with home town officials and not the place to come play and that isn’t what we are about, or is it?

Have a great Sunday night folks

Sunday Evening Weekend Check In

Filed under: Huskers, Nebraska, Omaha, UNO Hockey — eyeonomaha @ 8:10 pm

Back from a very long weekend.

Saturday we witnessed Kansas hang 79 on the Huskers and wondered if the football program is in a financial tailspin. That is the only thing that can explain not taking the defensive squad to a road game. That or the bus driver got lost on the way because there wasn’t any defense at that game.

We could go on for pages but Saturday night in Overland Park was bad enough.

Sunday was a much better day as once again we got to watch Brett Favre work his magic, this time on the Chiefs. If he continues to keep the Pack winning like this you have to think about another MVP for him. The Packers are riding on his arm alone and it does not seem to matter.

Good news for Chiefs fans though, Denver got belted by the Lions, yes the Lions, 44-7 which keeps Kansas City in a tie for first place.

While we were traveling the Sunshine state the Lexington teacher who skipped town with her 13 year old boyfriend was picked up in Mexico and shipped back to the states.

Looking at the charges, shes in deep shit as she should be. As the story continues to unfold it looks as if her dad helped rat out the relationship with the youth. Bet the next family dinner will be a fun one, even though she might be 60 years old before it happens. We can’t wait to hear from some of her defenders on this one. All we can ask is that the next time your around a 12-13 kid just try and grasp a mental picture. After you finish throwing up you can join us on the Bash this Bonehead Bandwagon.

Not that it surprised us but the UNO Mavericks were swept by Michigan on Friday and Saturday nights. The Mavs put in a great effort Saturday but gave up the game winner late in the 3rd. Friday Michigan exploded for 5 goals in the 3rd after UNO had taken a 2-1 lead. If this team can learn to play till the end of the game they could end up being pretty good. Let’s see how fast they mature. Let Wilke skate their legs off for a few practices.

More on the news tomorrow. We are beat from all the football this weekend.

The Mavericks posted a 13-3 win over St Cloud State Saturday afternoon keeping their unbeaten record in check. The Mav’s are now 8-0, 6-0 and were ranked #1 in their region going into the game.

UNO dropped another game Saturday to Miami of Ohio 5-2 in a penalty laced game for UNO. More on this when our resident booster returns from the trip. Next up for the Mav’s is 3rd ranked Michigan at home this weekend.

The Lancers snapped the loosing streak at 1 with a 4-1 win over Des Moines last night at the Buc Bowl. The Lancers play Indiana today at 5 p.m. at the Mid America Center.

Huskers fall 28-25 to Texas after a spirited 3 quarters of play. Things looked good up until the 4th quarter when the Texas running back ran free. More on this when the other staff returns from Austin.

Project Extra Mile is pushing to have O’Briens Lounge loose it liquor license after a bartender there served alcohol to a minor and they were then involved in a fatal crash. The owner of the tavern is also part owner of Mc Kenna’s

And I found this story and shuddered in fear.

The cost of beer could rise drastically this year. Due to a shortage of hops worldwide some beers may increase prices up to 10%. Also some micro and regional brewers may have to tweak their recipes because of the short availability of certain hops.

More farmers are planting corn to keep up with ethanol production along with storms, drought and the usual other suspects blamed.

Sox up 3-0 on Rockies

Thanks for letting me sit in for a morning, sorry I don’t have the edge the others do but I will work on it.

Weekend Post 10.21.07

As if you didn’t know already the Huskers were thumped again by Texas A&M Saturday. All the Palm waving for the new A.D. couldn’t save the big red as the defense gave up the farm again.

Nearly 9,000 fans watched the states #1 Football team win Saturday as UNO rolled passed Minnesota Duluth 42-17 behind Nate Wurth’s 3 touchdowns. UNO takes it’s 7-0 record to St Cloud State next weekend.

All you Husker Mourners should think about catching the next home game. We know how you are about climbing on a band wagon, well here is your chance to watch a team who’s spirit hasn’t been broken.

Side note: Former NCC foe North Dakota State beat the University Of Minnesota in football Saturday (Sorry Rebel). Who says these schools couldn’t play D-1 football. And how come nobody mentions Pat Behrns as at least an assistant coach at Nebraska. Now in his 14th year at 69th and Dodge all the guy does is win baby.

Last night the Mav hockey team won the Maverick Stampede with a 5-1 victory over Alabama-Huntsville.  Canisus picked up 3rd place with a 3-2 win over Manitoba. We think the pink is a good luck Jersey and the Mav’s should wear it till they loose. Nice to have the trophy back in our barn. Next weekend the Mav’s travel to Miami of Ohio for a weekend series.

Also Friday, former softball coach and child porn aficionado Mike Govig was formally indicted on child porn charges. Were trying to confirm the rumor that Father Herrick has requested Govig to be his cell mate.

More later…………….

A laptop computer was reported stolen from the Mayors office sometime between yesterday and a month ago. Looks like they were putting that one to good use. Wonder if it’s the one the Mayor puts all his good ideas on and that why nobody noticed it missing?

Saturday’s game between the Huskers and Texas A & M should prove to be a media circus as we play the “Who can ask the most ignorant question and stir up more shit” game from the media. The question we love the most is the one where some idiot asked if Callahan was going to resign. Yeah Ok lets see if we can answer that without asking it in public and looking like a total moron. Resign and not even get a parting gift ORRRRRRR Stay and continue to try and build something and get paid or wait for them to fire you and get 5.5 mil.  He’s staying . Next question?

Mav Hockey starts tonight with the Maverick Stampede.  Alabama-Huntsville takes on Canisius at 4:05 followed by UNO vs Manitoba at 7:05.  Get off your butts and get out and support the Mav’s.

And an Omaha man has just come forward with a tale that police busted into his house, beat him and then Tazerd him while he lay on his bed. This is supposed to have happened last summer and the man is now coming forward. Hmmmmm  you have to dream them up faster than this.

Back later when the latest media rumor about the Huskers hits the airwaves……
